Midsummer/Litha Ritual this Saturday!

On the longest day of the year, with the Sun at its highest point in the sky, we rejoice in the Sun’s life-giving warmth and ability to make things grow. We will share a Litha celebration (led by Lora) on Saturday, June 24th, at 7:45 pm.  All Frederick CUUPS rituals are family-friendly and open to everyone, and this ritual will include a drumming portion – please bring hand percussion if you would like to drum!  If you would like to assist with setup, Frederick CUUPS members will begin getting the ritual space ready at 7 pm. This year’s ritual will focus on giving energy back to the beautiful Earth that sustains us.  Lora created a great video teaching the chants that we will be using.  Click here to watch it and learn the chants 🙂  A snack/dessert potluck will follow the ritual, please clearly LABEL any offerings with the ingredients included.

Upcoming Ritual Schedule Update

After feedback from the community and conversation among the board of Frederick CUUPS, we are moving High Holiday celebrations to the nearest available Friday or Saturday evening to that holiday.  This allows us to be more accessible to more people.  We are also pushing back the start time slightly to 7:45 pm.  This is especially helpful on Fridays when people are commuting from work.  The potluck afterward will be a Snack/Dessert potluck instead of a meal since we expect people will eat beforehand given the later starting time.  Here is an updated list of all currently scheduled High Holiday rituals:

Saturday, May 6th, 7:45 pm: Beltane Ritual
Saturday, June 24th, 7:45 pm: Litha Ritual
Friday, July 28th, 7:45 pm: Lammas Ritual (link and details coming soon)
Saturday, November 4th, 7:45 pm: Samhain Ritual (link and details coming soon)
Friday, December 22nd, 7:45 pm: Yule Ritual (link and details coming soon)

Getting ready for Ostara

The Frederick CUUPS Ostara Ritual will be Monday, March 20th, at 7 pm. Like all Frederick CUUPS rituals, Ostara is open to everyone and family-friendly! On the first day of Spring, when day and night are balanced, Pagans honor that balance and seek it within while rejoicing in the stirrings of life in Nature.  We will be using two chants during our ritual, and in this video, Frederick CUUPS Co-Chair Irene demonstrates the chants as well as talks a little bit about the holiday.

First chant:

Open, open, open to the light
Open, open, farewell to the night

Second chant:

We are opening up to the sweet surrender
Of the luminous love-light of the One
We are opening up to the sweet surrender
Of the luminous love-light of the One
We are opening, we are opening
We are opening, we are opening

Please feel free to bring hand drums or other percussion instruments. There will be a potluck after the ritual.  Please clearly LABEL any offerings with the ingredients included.

Getting Ready for Samhain

Samhain is one of Frederick CUUPS largest rituals of the year.  We are so grateful that so many people choose to spend this beautiful holiday with us!  This year’s Samhain ritual will be Sunday, October 30th, at 7 pm.

Frederick CUUPS co-chair Irene recorded a video going over information about the ritual as well as the chants we’ll be using. Click here or on the video below to view.

Samhain falls at the time of year the light noticeably fades. Pagans reflect on and review the past year and welcome the Celtic New Year. In this season, Pagans also honor death as a part of the sacred circle of life and remember those who have died. We will share a Samhain celebration (led by Irene). Parents, please remember that grief is a part of Samhain and decide whether your child will be comfortable exploring those emotions.

Please feel free to bring an item or items for the Ancestral/Remembrance Altar. This year, we will have spaces for Ancestors, Beloved Friends, Ancestors of the Order (ascended masters, trailblazing witches – the Mighty Dead of Witchcraft), and Animal Companions. You are also welcome to bring your preferred method of divination (tarot cards, runes, what have you) for the Potluck and socializing afterward. Samhain is a wonderful time for divination. And no worries if you don’t do any divining–I’m sure there’ll be plenty of readers who would be happy to practice on you 🙂

We will be using four chants during the course of the ritual, the link to the video is above.

Fire Releasing by Irene Glasse (starts at 4:50 in the video)

Fire turn the dark to light
Release the shadows to the night
Break the chains and set me free
Samhain Fire, transform me
Samhain Fire, transform me

There is No Time by Kellianna (starts at 6:00 in the video)

There is no time but now
There is no place but here
In the sacred we do stand
In a circle hand in hand

Invocation (starts at 7:38 in the video)
(Part 1) Carry our words on the wings of the wind
(Part 2) Come to us our blessed kin

Weaver Weaver (starts at 9:07 in the video)

Weaver, weaver weave this thread,
Whole and strong into your web.
Healer, healer, heal our pain,
In love may they return again

Traditional dress for Samhain is harvest colors or dark colors (mourning dress).

Potluck to follow the ritual, please clearly LABEL any offerings with the ingredients included.

Samhain Ritual and October Offerings

“Autumn, the year’s last, loveliest smile”

The growing season is winding down, and we stand between the two final harvest holidays of the Wheel of the Year.  It is a beautiful time to deepen our spirituality, release that which no longer serves and set new intentions for the coming season.

firemagicOctober Earth Centered Spirituality Service
Sunday, October 16th, 10:30 am

Our Earth-centered Spirituality Group meets on the 3rd Sunday of each month in the Chapel at 10:30 am. This time provides an opportunity to focus on the Sixth Source of Unitarian Universalism: “Spiritual teachings of earth-centered traditions which celebrate the sacred circle of life and instruct us to live in harmony with the rhythms of nature.” Join us for our October meeting (led by Irene). We will honor the Blood Moon (the name of the full moon in October, which happens to fall on the 16th) with a Releasing ceremony and set intentions for our Winter Work.  Link to Facebook event.

October Full Moon Labyrinth Walk
Sunday, October 16th, 7 – 9 pm

13466405_10201817112786101_5409022108425060973_nCome enjoy the beauty and peace of the Labyrinth by the light of the full moon! The labyrinth will be illuminated from 7 pm till 9 pm. Everyone is welcome. Weather permitting, this will be an outdoor, drumming walk (most likely the last outdoor walk of the year). The first hour will be a quiet walk, the second hour drumming, so feel free to bring hand drums and other percussion instruments. If you haven’t walked a Labyrinth before, there is no ceremony or ritual. We put out the little flickering LED tealights and keep the space open. For an in-depth article on Labyrinths and what to expect at one of our open walks, visit this linkLink to Facebook event.

Frederick Pagan Pride Day Wrap-Up and THANKS!

20160917_144857
Our donations – over 391 pounds of food!

THANK YOU to everyone who came out for the second annual Frederick Pagan Pride Day! What an amazing day! Over the course of the festival, 393 people came through the Welcome area and we raised over 391 pounds of food for the Frederick Food Bank. We are all so grateful for such an extraordinary gathering of shining souls. Photos from the day can be viewed here.

A huge thanks to the staff of Frederick Pagan Pride Day (a combination of Frederick CUUPS board members and volunteers). These incredible people choose to devote hours of their time to creating safe and sacred space for our larger community.  They stayed late on Friday to help set up, arrived just after dawn Saturday to continue the work and didn’t get home till well after sundown Saturday night.  For all those hours, all that effort, all the work that went unseen but was utterly vital to Frederick Pagan Pride Day, deep and heartfelt thanks.

Thank you also to the workshop presenters, ritual leaders and performers. The most beautiful container in the world does us no good if it is empty. We are so grateful to the members of the greater Tribe who chose to share their gifts, their wisdom, their energy and their talents with us, who filled our pop-up village with light, love, laughter and connection.

Lastly, and most importantly, to the community. Yes, YOU. Thank you for coming to Frederick Pagan Pride Day. Thank you for bringing the best of yourself, for wearing your spirituality on your sleeve, for sharing your time, energy and excitement with us. For donating so generously to our local community with your gifts of much-needed food.  You are why we do this. Thank you for coming together as one Blessed Community, one Tribe, one People. This is the symphony, the tapestry of many threads, the universe of many stars. When we shine together, we can accomplish so much. Thank you for letting us be a part of your song, your weaving, and the light you radiate.  We can’t wait till next year!

If you are interested in being a part of the 2017 Frederick Pagan Pride Day, email us at frederickpaganpride@gmail.com or join the Volunteer group on Facebook (just request to be added).
