September Events with Frederick CUUPS

September is here and early fall offers some wonderful gatherings and events! This month contains a fusion of in person and streaming programming as we navigate the coronavirus pandemic. Please join us as we stay connected and come together to honor the Earth, Gods, Ancestors, and Wheel of the Year.

Donation Yoga for Advancing Beginners
Tuesdays from 10 – 11 AM

One of the best ways we can stay resilient and healthy is to exercise and cultivate mindfulness. These donation classes with E-RYT 200 Irene Glasse are open to individuals fully vaccinated against COVID-19 (two weeks past their last vaccination). At this time, masks are required inside the building. On days when the weather is nice, we will practice outside beneath the willow tree so that masks can be optional. If we are indoors, they must be worn correctly over both mouth and nose. An Advancing Beginners class is most accessible to people who have some basic familiarity with yoga and are able to comfortably take low lunge (lunge with one foot forward and the back knee touching the mat), tabletop, warrior two and other foundational yoga poses. Previous classes can be viewed here.

Facebook Event here. Zoom link here. Class is currently available on Zoom only.

Thursday, September 2nd, 7 PM: Components of a Magickal Healing Session
Thursday, September 16th, 7 PM: Past Life Reconciliation I

Earth Centered Spirituality Service
Sunday, September 9th, 12 PM

This time provides an opportunity to focus on the Sixth Source of Unitarian Universalism: “Spiritual teachings of earth-centered traditions which celebrate the sacred circle of life and instruct us to live in harmony with the rhythms of nature.” Although we had hoped to return to in-person Earth Services, the rise of the Delta variant has caused us to reconsider. Here’s the Zoom link. If it asks for a passcode, please use: 536567. Facebook event here.

Labyrinth Cleanup
Friday, September 17th, 5 – 7 PM

Our September outdoor Labyrinth walk is Saturday, September 18th, which means it’s time to tidy up the Labyrinth! If you would like to help, please join us. This service to the community is not glamorous, but it is absolutely vital. With four volunteers, it only takes an hour to do. Remember to wear clothes you can get dirty in and sunblock/bug spray if you need it 🙂 If you are vaccinated, you can wear a mask or not as you choose. If you are not vaccinated, you must wear a mask. The most effective way to clear the stones of the Labyrinth is with a string trimmer. If you have one you can bring along, that would be awesome. We also have a few that are available for use. Spades and shears can also be useful for tidying the beds in the Labyrinth courtyard and clearing dirt where it’s piled up on the stones of the Labyrinth. Facebook event here.

Library Blessing Ceremony & Open Browsing (Labyrinth Walk Afterwards)
Saturday, September 18th, 6:30 – 7:30 PM

It has been a long journey, but the UUCF Library is ready to open! Our library is home to a huge collection of metaphysical and pagan books, tarot and oracle decks, periodicals and more. Over the last two years, our Library Mages have been working diligently to get the library ready for borrowing. Join us for a ceremony to inaugurate, formally name our library, and offer blessings to support its work. Our ritual will be outdoors with books representing different topics in the library to carry the blessing. After the ceremony, there will be open browsing (masks are required indoors) for groups of four per library room. The Labyrinth walk will follow our ceremony, so there should be plenty of time to browse as well as walk the Labyrinth and enjoy the drum circle. Our collection can be viewed at www.librarything.com/catalog/UUCFLibrary

This library has been a labor of love for many people over years, from its start as part of the Open Hearth Foundation in Washington, DC. It was formed initially by books donated to create a resource for local pagans and those who follow or are interested in earth-centered spirituality. After the OHF closed, the library was eventually donated to the Frederick Covenant of Universalist Unitarian PaganS (CUUPS). Over 3,000 books, tarot decks, magazines and other items were transferred to the Universalist Unitarian Congregation of Frederick. Since then, volunteers have worked to organize the library and incorporate additional materials donated to the library that are in keeping with the six sources of Universalist Unitarianism, expanding it beyond its roots as a resource for pagans.

Full Moon Labyrinth Walk, Drum Circle & Open Library Browsing
Saturday, September 18th, 7:30 – 9:30 PM

Come enjoy the beauty and peace of the Labyrinth by the light of the full moon! This will be an outdoor, drumming walk. The event will be canceled in the event of rain.

If you are vaccinated and outdoors you can wear a mask or not as you like. If you are not vaccinated you must wear a mask. Per UUCF policies, you must wear a mask if you go inside the building.

The first half hour will be a quiet walk, the remainder drumming, so feel free to bring hand drums and other percussion instruments.

If you haven’t walked a Labyrinth before, there is no ceremony or ritual. A Labyrinth Walk is safe, open Sacred Space for personal exploration. Please plan to arrive by 9 pm to allow enough time for your walk. For an in-depth article on Labyrinths and what to expect at one of our open walks, visit this link: https://pinkpaganpriestess.wordpress.com/2012/10/25/an-introduction-to-labyrinth-walking/

This Labyrinth Walk follows our Library Opening Ceremony and the library will be available for browsing during the walk (masks required).

Recommended donation of $5. Please help support Labyrinth Walks at the UUCF. Facebook event here.

October Dark Moon Drum Circle
Saturday, October 2nd, 6 – 8 PM

Come together with community, connect with the rhythm and learn some new grooves with percussionist Strix from Kindred Crow. A drum circle is a celebration of life, community, and music-making in the moment. Please bring hand drums, shakers and other hand percussion. A few small hand drums will be available if you do not have your own.

Dancers welcome, fire spinning welcome if you bring your own Safety.

Mask Guidelines: if you are vaccinated and we are outdoors, you can wear a mask or not as you like. If you are not vaccinated you must wear a mask. All people over age 2 must be masked when inside the building. Facebook event here.

October Earth Centered Spirituality Service
Saturday, October 10th, 12 PM

Join members of the Frederick CUUPS community for our monthly Earth Centered Spirituality Service. This time provides an opportunity to focus on the Sixth Source of Unitarian Universalism: “Spiritual teachings of earth-centered traditions which celebrate the sacred circle of life and instruct us to live in harmony with the rhythms of nature.”

Although we had hoped to return to in-person Earth Services, the rise of the Delta variant has caused us to reconsider. This month’s Earth Service will be on Zoom. Here’s the Zoom link. If it asks for a passcode, please use: 536567.

Recommended donation of $5. Facebook event here.

Open Samhain Ritual: An Underworld Journey
Saturday, October 23rd, arrive between 7:30 and 8:30 PM

Join Frederick CUUPS for an open outdoor Samhain Ritual! Samhain falls at the time of year when the light noticeably fades. We honor death as a part of the sacred circle of life and honor our loved ones who have crossed the Veil.

This ritual is an opportunity to move through Sacred Space. As such, there is no set start and finish time–it does not have a group ritual structure. Your journey will take you around the grounds of the UUCF. Please dress appropriately for the weather and wear sturdy shoes – the path will be uneven in places. We will hold the space open from 7:30 to 9 pm, and you should expect to spend somewhere between a half hour to an hour on your journey. Please arrive no later than 8:30 to begin your journey.

Participants each need to bring one small bag with them – a drawstring fabric pouch large enough to hold a handful of coins is recommended.

Parents, please remember that grief is a part of Samhain – this ritual is recommended for ages 12 and up. Please consider whether your child will be comfortable exploring the emotions of loss and grief.

Traditional dress for Samhain is harvest colors or dark colors (mourning dress).

Recommended donation is $5. Facebook event here.

Dark Moon Mourning and Passageway Ritual
Tuesday, August 18th, 7 PM

Join Suz Thackston and members of the Frederick CUUPS community in a Dark Moon ritual to honor the souls lost to COVID-19, the grief of those who remain, and support the transition of the newly dead to the Afterlife.

On the dark of the moon we gather together to honor the souls of those who have succumbed to the shafts of Apollon Smintheos and Arrow-Pouring Artemis. We gather to hold space for the grief of the living who are learning to move forward without their loved ones. We gather to support the transition of newly dead to their status as ancestors, spirits, and states of being we do not yet comprehend. And we gather to petition Persephone to open wide her gates and her gleaming arms to accept her children into her embrace and welcome them home.

Feel free to participate in this ritual to the degree that your circumstances allow.

For the full Monty please gather:

~ a vessel of lustration water which will be purified and used to cleanse you and your space
~ a libation vessel containing water, milk, honey or olive oil (no wine, please) and a receiving vessel into which the opening and closing libations will be poured
~ barley and a bowl in which to fling it (assuming you’re not outside or don’t want to sweep it up afterwards)
~ matches (or a lighter and small twig)
~ asperger (a small bundle of herbs used to sprinkle the lustration water)- mint, rosemary and basil are all good choices
~ a chalice of water which will be used to transform the grief and fear of the dead to peace and comfort for the living
~ a representation of the bereaved families (such as bread, seeds or stones, in a bowl, it will be covered with water).

Because this is a kthonic ritual, that is a ritual performed on behalf of the dead and dedicated to Underworld Gods, the libations and offerings will not be shared with you, all will go to the Gods and the dead.

If you’d like to read a hymn to Hekate, Hermes, Persephone, Apollon or the beloved dead, please let Suz know in the comments. You can read something of your choice or she can give it to you.

Building on the premise that reality is a tapestry, participants will learn the basic skills necessary to transform mundane objects into powerful magical tools. This allows for the practitioner to maximize their efforts in everything from spellwork to day-to-day tasks like shielding and cleansing.  During class we will create:

– A shielding tool
– A healing tool
– A focusing tool

It is highly recommend that participants bring:

-One ring (Any kind will do)
-One necklace (Any materials are fine)
-One glass stone/flat marble (such as the kind from a fish tank)

We will be using these items as our “blanks” that will be magically enhanced. In addition it is also recommended you have on hand:

-A journal
-Snacks for grounding
-Pillows/blankets for comfort.
-Smoke or liquid cleansing tools such as dry burnable herbs or essential oils.

Please email CUUPS@frederickuu.org for the Zoom link.

Orlog, Wyrd, and Luck with Chris of Elk Ridge Kindred
Monday, June 29th, 7 PM

We are constantly building our own fate. Who we associate with and where we come from all come into play when building our metaphysical store of energy. Our decisions open and close possibilities. Our friendships influence the path we’re on. What’s the best way to build a strong energetic framework? Orlog, Wyrd, and Luck are important parts of Heathen spirituality. This workshop will focus on these three concepts, how they are connected, and how to positively increase their influences in your life and the lives of people you choose to spend your time with. Please email CUUPS@frederickuu.org for the Zoom link.

Recommended donation for class is $10. To make a donation for the class, go to: http://www.frederickuu.org/about/Support_UUCF

Stay connected with Frederick CUUPS: Robust online gathering schedule announced

Good afternoon my friends,

The Frederick Covenant of Unitarian Universalist Pagans (Frederick CUUPS or FCUUPS) is based in Frederick, Maryland.  As our fellow Maryland residents are already well aware, the need for physical distancing between people has brought our state to a standstill.  As of a couple hours ago, all nonessential businesses in the state are closing.  Other than a handful of first responder and vital service workers, many if not most of us are at home.

This situation is challenging, scary and unpredictable, but we do not need to walk through this upheaval alone.   If you have an internet connection, or even just a phone, you can stay connected to community.

The board of Frederick CUUPS is offering a dense programming schedule for the remainder of the month of March and the entire month of April.  We are offering a minimum of one online group gathering each week and weekend.  All online gatherings welcome donations but do not require them.  What we most wish is to keep each other connected, safe, sane and loved during this time.  Please feel free to attend any or all of our offerings whether you can make a donation or not.

We are using two primary platforms for online offerings – Zoom videoconferencing and Facebook livestreaming.  Below is a list of our upcoming activities (which may expand further).  All our offerings are open to everyone, not just members of the Frederick CUUPS community.

We will continue to expand our offerings to help everyone stay supported and connected at this time.  If you are interested in helping by offering a workshop, class, ceremony or facilitated/hosted gathering, I would love to hear from you.  We’d like to support fiber arts groups, study groups, even just wine-and-conversation groups.  We just need people willing to lead and organize them. If that’s you, please drop us a line.

We will get through this, my friends.  Remember, we are the descendants of the ones who survived.  Our Ancestors walk with us, our beautiful green earth holds us, and our strength as a diverse, inclusive community was meant for times like these.  Our blood is strong, and so are we. See you soon.

With great love,

Irene Glasse
FCUUPS Acting President

This ritual will include a Pathworking (guided meditation). If you find that food helps you ground, you might consider having snacks nearby for after the ritual.

Frederick CUUPS Ostara Ritual

Blessed Ostara!

Join Frederick CUUPS for an open, family-friendly Ostara Ritual on Saturday, March 21st, at 7:45 PM! On the first day of Spring, when day and night are balanced, Pagans honor that balance and seek it within while rejoicing in the stirrings of life in Nature.

A snack/dessert potluck will follow the ritual. Please clearly label any contributions with the ingredients used so that people with food sensitivities and dietary restrictions can make safe choices for themselves.

Our theme this year is planting. Before the ritual, think about what you would like to begin this spring. You are welcome to put intention into and decorate a biodegradable seed cup before ritual and bring it along, or decorate one of the ones we will provide. We will also have seeds and dirt available, but you’re welcome to take your seed cup back home with you and plant whatever you would like in it. If you have a black thumb or do you not have the option of tending a plant wherever you live, you can simply plant the container as your “seed.”

You can learn the chants we will be using in the video below.

Health and Safety note from Frederick CUUPS

It is currently cold and flu season and as you know, there’s a new virus running amuck on the world stage. It’s always good to practice safe hygiene – this is an opportunity to cultivate good habits on that front.

Frederick CUUPS events are open to all and take place at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Frederick. The UUCF shelters a robust, diverse community of all ages. As a result, it’s good to remember that the spaces we are using and events we offer are shared by many people. At this time, please err on the side of caution when it comes to protecting our beloved community. If you are feeling unwell, please do not ‘push through’ in order to attend an event. It’s better to miss an activity than run the risk of getting other people sick.

When you arrive, if you have not recently washed your hands, please do so. There are also hand sanitizer dispensers mounted throughout the building. Please feel free to use them. Try not to touch your face and cough into your elbow rather than into your hands if you need to cough.

We have historically been an affectionate community and hugs are a common form of greeting for us. However, I would like to encourage some different expressions of affection. Elbow bumps are becoming popular and I have long felt that the art of bowing is sadly underrepresented in our culture. If you do want to hug someone, please get consent first (this should be standard practice anyway). Remember that it’s impossible to tell by looking if a person is immunocompromised.

At this time, we do not have any plans to scale back or cancel any Frederick CUUPS events. However, we will continue to monitor the evolving news regarding coronavirus and adjust our offerings to best support the health and safety of our community.

May you be well, always.

New Years Day Purification Ritual, Masquerade Ball Ticket Giveaway

A New Year Begins!

The board of Frederick CUUPS wishes you and yours a gentle, centered entry into the new calendar year.  To help support a new solar cycle, every year we offer the New Year’s Day Purification Ritual.  It is one of our most beautiful and most highly attended rituals every year.  On Wednesday, January 1st, Sacred Space will be held from 5 to 8 pm in the Sanctuary of the UUCF.

Attendees are invited to move through the Elements, releasing the shadows of 2019 as they go. Elemental Guides will be available at each Quarter to offer a way to move into the energy of a new year. End your Purification journey with a time of meditation to receive any messages for the new year.

This ritual is an opportunity to move through Sacred Space. As such, there is no set start and finish time–it does not have a formal ritual structure. Your journey will be self-guided. We will hold the space open from 5 to 8 pm, and you should expect to spend somewhere between a half hour to an hour on your journey.

Please remember that this is a very popular ritual. There is a single path to follow, so at ‘peak’ times (generally around 7 pm), there can be a line. Please plan to arrive early or after the ‘peak’ and please be patient with the process of the people around you.

All are welcome to attend.  This ritual is held in silence and includes written prompts.  As a result, we recommend this ritual for ages 12 and up. Child care is available for younger children.

Other Upcoming Events

Friday, January 10th, 7 – 8:30 pm
Indoor Full Moon Labyrinth Walk & Donation Energy Healing

Come enjoy the beauty and peace of the Labyrinth by the light of the full moon! Everyone is welcome. During the cooler months, we take our Labyrinth practice indoors, and will be walking the Rainbow Seed Labyrinth, a canvas Classical-pattern Labyrinth. Please remember clean socks or slippers to walk the Labyrinth in.

If you haven’t walked a Labyrinth before, there is no ceremony or ritual. A Labyrinth Walk is safe, open Sacred Space for personal exploration. Please plan to arrive by 8 pm to allow enough time for your walk. For an in-depth article on Labyrinths and what to expect at one of our open walks, visit this link: https://pinkpaganpriestess.wordpress.com/2012/10/25/an-introduction-to-labyrinth-walking/

Donation energy healing will be available. Divination practice is welcome – please feel free to bring your preferred divinatory tool (runes, tarot, ogham, etc) to practice/trade readings. Or, just stop by for a reading!

Recommended donation of $5. Please help support Labyrinth Walks at the UUCF.

Sunday, January 12th, 10:30 – 11:30 AM
January Earth Centered Spirituality Service

Our Earth-centered Spirituality Group meets on the 2nd Sunday of each month in the Chapel. During the cooler months, we meet at 10:30 am. This time provides an opportunity to focus on the Sixth Source of Unitarian Universalism: “Spiritual teachings of earth-centered traditions which celebrate the sacred circle of life and instruct us to live in harmony with the rhythms of nature.”

Sunday, January 25th, 7 – 10 pm
Legends Lodge Tavern

Join us for an evening of myth and community at Legends Lodge! The Lodge is a place to gather with friends for the sharing of stories from our faith paths. You’re welcome to come to listen or to share! If you would like to tell a story, please plan to share a myth or tale from your tradition (ancient and contemporary myths welcome), a song or poem, or simply speak about what a specific Deity means to you. Please plan to speak for no more than 10 minutes. This event is Bring-Your-Own-Beverages-And-Snacks (yes, mead is welcome). Recommended donation of $5. Also, if you have large floor cushions or pillows and don’t mind them being used, please bring them along. We make a big cushy nest as one of the seating options (along with tables and chairs).

Blackfeather Mystery School ~ Rook Course 2020

Begins Thursday, February 6th, at 7 pm

The Blackfeather Mystery School is a full-spectrum training in Empowered Witchcraft developed by mystic witch Irene Glasse and shaman Jake Hackney. The 2020 series is the Rook level, an intermediate training. This training is focused specifically on developing relationships with the Ancestors, Gods and Spirits, Shamanic healing techniques, Pagan Pastoral Counseling, Shadow Work, Journeywork and Remediation (Hex/Curse Breaking, Ancestral Paradox healing, Space Clearing, etc). This Mystery School is a synthesis and outgrowth of more than 20 years in the art and practice of witchcraft and threads the needle between the structure of Traditional Witchcraft and the freedom of Mysticism. A basic grounding in witchcraft and meditation/journeywork is recommended. More advanced practitioners may find the course helpful in terms of filling ‘gaps’ in their skill sets. This series is drop-in-able.

This is the inaugural run of this training level, so it is donation-based. Recommended donation of $10/session. Blackfeather Mystery School meets on the first and third Thursdays of the month starting in February of 2020.
