August Events with Frederick CUUPS

For the duration of Social Distancing due to Coronavirus, all Frederick CUUPS offerings are moving online!  As the COVID-19 Pandemic continues to impact our ability to gather in person, we are offering a dense programming schedule for the summer months. This situation is challenging, scary and unpredictable, but we do not need to walk through this upheaval alone. If you have an internet connection, or even just a phone, you can stay connected to community.

We are hosting a minimum of two gatherings each week. All online gatherings welcome donations but do not require them. What we most wish is to keep each other connected, safe, sane, and loved during this time. Please feel free to attend any or all of our offerings whether you can make a donation or not.

All our offerings are open to everyone, not just members of the Frederick CUUPS community. All times listed are in Eastern.

We are using Zoom, a video conferencing platform.

Single Date Events/Short Series:

~We recommend bread, or a small bowl of berries, for the symbolism, but it can be anything so long as you can take part away from the whole.
~A comfortable space for visualization

We will be using Zoom, a video conferencing platform, to celebrate together. YOU NEED TO BE LOGGED INTO YOUR ZOOM ACCOUNT TO JOIN THE MEETING. Accounts are free and take only a couple minutes to set up. If you do not have stable internet connectivity in your area, using the call-in function for audio only can be more accessible. Dark Moon Mourning and Passageway Ritual
Tuesday, August 18th, 7 PM

Join Suz Thackston and members of the Frederick CUUPS community in a Dark Moon ritual to honor the souls lost to COVID-19, the grief of those who remain, and support the transition of the newly dead to the Afterlife.

On the dark of the moon we gather together to honor the souls of those who have succumbed to the shafts of Apollon Smintheos and Arrow-Pouring Artemis. We gather to hold space for the grief of the living who are learning to move forward without their loved ones. We gather to support the transition of newly dead to their status as ancestors, spirits, and states of being we do not yet comprehend. And we gather to petition Persephone to open wide her gates and her gleaming arms to accept her children into her embrace and welcome them home.

Feel free to participate in this ritual to the degree that your circumstances allow.

For the full Monty please gather:

~ a vessel of lustration water which will be purified and used to cleanse you and your space
~ a libation vessel containing water, milk, honey or olive oil (no wine, please) and a receiving vessel into which the opening and closing libations will be poured
~ barley and a bowl in which to fling it (assuming you’re not outside or don’t want to sweep it up afterwards)
~ matches (or a lighter and small twig)
~ asperger (a small bundle of herbs used to sprinkle the lustration water)- mint, rosemary and basil are all good choices
~ a chalice of water which will be used to transform the grief and fear of the dead to peace and comfort for the living
~ a representation of the bereaved families (such as bread, seeds or stones, in a bowl, it will be covered with water).

Because this is a kthonic ritual, that is a ritual performed on behalf of the dead and dedicated to Underworld Gods, the libations and offerings will not be shared with you, all will go to the Gods and the dead.

If you’d like to read a hymn to Hekate, Hermes, Persephone, Apollon or the beloved dead, please let Suz know in the comments. You can read something of your choice or she can give it to you.

Finding yourself drawn to the gods and goddesses of the north? Ever wondered how heathens relate to their gods and goddesses? In this discussion we’ll sit down and talk about the unique nature of the Northern European Deities, and developing relationships with them.

Weaving Enchantments ~ Creating Magickal Jewelry with Caine
Friday, June 26th, at 7 PM

One of humanities greatest talents is that of being able to make and use tools. Building on the premise that reality is a tapestry, participants will learn the basic skills necessary to transform mundane objects into powerful magical tools. This allows for the practitioner to maximize their efforts in everything from spellwork to day-to-day tasks like shielding and cleansing.  During class we will create:

– A shielding tool
– A healing tool
– A focusing tool

It is highly recommend that participants bring:

-One ring (Any kind will do)
-One necklace (Any materials are fine)
-One glass stone/flat marble (such as the kind from a fish tank)

We will be using these items as our “blanks” that will be magically enhanced. In addition it is also recommended you have on hand:

-A journal
-Snacks for grounding
-Pillows/blankets for comfort.
-Smoke or liquid cleansing tools such as dry burnable herbs or essential oils.

Please email CUUPS@frederickuu.org for the Zoom link.

Our friendships influence the path we’re on. What’s the best way to build a strong energetic framework? Orlog, Wyrd, and Luck are important parts of Heathen spirituality. This workshop will focus on these three concepts, how they are connected, and how to positively increase their influences in your life and the lives of people you choose to spend your time with. Frederick CUUPS Ostara Ritual

Blessed Ostara!

Join Frederick CUUPS for an open, family-friendly Ostara Ritual on Saturday, March 21st, at 7:45 PM! On the first day of Spring, when day and night are balanced, Pagans honor that balance and seek it within while rejoicing in the stirrings of life in Nature.

A snack/dessert potluck will follow the ritual. Please clearly label any contributions with the ingredients used so that people with food sensitivities and dietary restrictions can make safe choices for themselves.

Our theme this year is planting. Before the ritual, think about what you would like to begin this spring. You are welcome to put intention into and decorate a biodegradable seed cup before ritual and bring it along, or decorate one of the ones we will provide. We will also have seeds and dirt available, but you’re welcome to take your seed cup back home with you and plant whatever you would like in it. If you have a black thumb or do you not have the option of tending a plant wherever you live, you can simply plant the container as your “seed.”

You can learn the chants we will be using in the video below.

Health and Safety note from Frederick CUUPS

It is currently cold and flu season and as you know, there’s a new virus running amuck on the world stage. It’s always good to practice safe hygiene – this is an opportunity to cultivate good habits on that front.

Frederick CUUPS events are open to all and take place at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Frederick. The UUCF shelters a robust, diverse community of all ages. As a result, it’s good to remember that the spaces we are using and events we offer are shared by many people. At this time, please err on the side of caution when it comes to protecting our beloved community. If you are feeling unwell, please do not ‘push through’ in order to attend an event. It’s better to miss an activity than run the risk of getting other people sick.

When you arrive, if you have not recently washed your hands, please do so. There are also hand sanitizer dispensers mounted throughout the building. Please feel free to use them. Try not to touch your face and cough into your elbow rather than into your hands if you need to cough.

We have historically been an affectionate community and hugs are a common form of greeting for us. However, I would like to encourage some different expressions of affection. Elbow bumps are becoming popular and I have long felt that the art of bowing is sadly underrepresented in our culture. If you do want to hug someone, please get consent first (this should be standard practice anyway). Remember that it’s impossible to tell by looking if a person is immunocompromised.

At this time, we do not have any plans to scale back or cancel any Frederick CUUPS events. However, we will continue to monitor the evolving news regarding coronavirus and adjust our offerings to best support the health and safety of our community.

May you be well, always.
